Welcome to Crete, Chania
Crete is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean with approximately 8,000 square kilometers. The island is right at the point where the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa meet.
Chania has almost 150.000 inhabitants and is 2376 sq.km. More than half of this area is mountains. The town of Chania is the 2nd greater city n Crete situated in the north-eastern part of prefecture of Chania. The town is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of the harmonious prefecture and it is divided in the old and the new town. The Old Town has been characterized as a preservable town and is composed of 5 quarters: Topana, Evraiki, Splantzia and Sidrivani which are connected.
One of the most characteristic natural beauty of the Cretan scenery is the famous Cretan gorge Samaria which begin at the mountainous areas of the island and end to the sea. The gorge is the longest ravine in Europe. The walk through is approximately 18 kilometers and take in the most spectacular scenery. Here you will also most likely meet the well-known Cretan goat, otherwise called kri – kri.
Amongst other places of interest that Chania and western Crete offers is Frangokastello Fortress, Topolia Cave, Municipal Market, Hasan Pasha Mosque, The Splantzia quarter, Archeological museum & Byzantine museum just to mention a few.
